Strength through the General Union

Category: News, Victories – Author: admin – 6:10 pm

Hi all. Corrector here.

Recently, some NOVA teachers were paid (very late) wages, but ONLY because they went to the Labour Standards Office WITH the Union, who brought cameras.

“Our claim at the Labour Standards Office over unpaid wages was very effective, NOVA actually paid the wages.

Yesterday, we were contacted by the Labour Standards Offices inspectors and were told that NOVA would pay all outstanding wages owed to teachers. After having confirmed with some ATs and Trainers, it appears that they were paid. If you have any information to the contrary.

This is remarkable because one of the members who filed the claim had actually gone to the Labour Standards Office on Tuesday (with a group of other Trainers) and was basically turned away, not even having their names taken. The Labour Standards Office’s excuse was that NOVA had promised to pay.”

If anyone needs proof of Union strength, this is it.

The recent news with about NOVA should be sobering for us all for a few reasons. First, ANY company can go under, EVEN the largest. If that should happen to NOVA, not only will the teachers working for NOVA be in a perilous position (facing hard, Ramones like decisions about staying in Japan or jumping ship), but the teachers market will be absolutely flooded, making it difficult to find jobs for everyone in the teaching field.

The General Union has had many new NOVA members joining recently. Let us hope it isn’t too little too late.

Solidarity.
